This is pretty much the greatest Super Bowl ad of all time from Budweiser.
It will never air on TV and you had to go through hoops to even watch it on their website but here it is....

E BOOT CAMP
I CANNOT BELIEVE I LET THIS ONE SLIP BY ME. MY COUSIN, COREY WHOM I AM SO PROUD OF AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 30 HAS WRITTEN A BOOK WHICH HAS BEEN PUBLISHED BY JOHN WILEY PUBLISHING. THE BOOK IS ALREADY OFF TO A GREAT START AND CAN BE FOUND AT MOST BOOKSTORES. IF NOT FOLLOW THE LINK HE WROTE IN THE FOLLOWING EMAILS. ANYONE WHO HAS A WEB SITE, NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK.........
Well, today's the day. In a few moments, you will receive the "Buy the Book" email that provides details on how to purchase the eBoot Camp book and get the amazing gifts donated from an all-star list of successful authors and speakers.
I put my heart and soul into this book. It's been seven years in the making and I filled it with every juicy secret, strategy, or technique I had inside me that can help people create a powerful presence on the web for themselves or their business. And I made absolute sure my cousin Cary could understand every word. Why? Becuase Cousin Cary is not an Internet marketer - he's a real estate agent in Waynesville, North Carolina. The Internet is where he checks email, sports scores and stock quotes. But he also needs the Internet to help his business succeed. I wrote this book for him...and every other person who doesn't have thousands of dollars to pay a professional but is willing to roll up their sleeves and learn what it takes to use the Internet to grow their business.
If you believe the book will help you, I hope you'll buy the book. If you believe the book can help a few of your friends or colleagues, I hope you'll buy two or three or five :). And if you trust in me that the book will help every pair of hands that it touches, you will do me the honor of forwarding the email I send you to your friends, family and colleagues. In all seriousness, with the state of our economy, people need to use the Internet to market and grow their business. It can be the difference between staying open and closing up shop for good. My promise to you and those you recommend the book to is simple: to demystify the complex world of Internet marketing and provide the skills needed to roll up your sleeves and win the war for online attention.
In a few minutes, you will receive the email you can send to your friends, family, and colleagues. All you will need to do is hit forward and send it off. If you'd like to personlize the email, you can add a line or two at the top. Or you can send as is - it's up to you. The only thing I request is that you do send it out today because the gifts I'm offering are time sensitive. Lastly, Amazon still says the books is available for "pre-order" but Amazon did receive their shipment today and so all books will ship out tomorrow or Friday.
I can't thank you enough - but I think you know how much I sincerelly appreciate your efforts.
Sincerely,
Corey

UNBELIEVABLE SITE
One of the most interesting sites I have ever seen. Just put your mouse on a city anywhere in the world and the newspaper headlines pop up... Double click and the page gets larger.... I thought you all would like to know about this site, if you don't already. Also, if you look at the European papers, the far left side of Germany will pop up as The Stars & Stripes (European edition, of course). AND, this site changes everyday with the publication of new editions of the paper. Hope you enjoy this..

KILIMANJARO CLIMB AND SAFARI
I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT MY DEAREST FRIENDS OF 30+ YEARS DECIDED TO TACKLE THE CLIMB TO THE SUMMIT OF MOUNT KILIMANJARO. THE FOLLOWING IS A COPY OF AN EMAIL HIS WIFE AUDRY SENT ME LAST NIGHT- (P.S.) HE WENT WITH 2 OTHER FRIENDS OF MINE, STEVE AND GARY)
Hi, it's Audrey. I returned home to Florida late this evening (Tuesday night) and it is now 1:00 AM and I just received a phone call from Ed. He doesn't have service but Steve Feller was kind enough to let him use his phone. He sounds wonderful. As you know, he reached the Summit on Monday evening. It hasn't been easy getting all the information from him but the call I just received did give me some info. He never doubted for 1 minute that he wouldn't reach the Summit. It was quite an ordeal he said and the hardest thing he has ever done but he did it. They left for the Summit at Midnight so they could reach the top at Sunrise, 8 hours later. They returned yesterday (Monday) to the hotel where the climb began, took their 1st shower in a week. It is now 8:00 AM on Wednesday (8 hours ahead of us) and they are getting ready to fly to where they begin their Safari. There are so many questions that I have no time to ask so we'll ALL just have to wait to hear everything. I did ask him if he had any altitude sickness and the interesting answer was everyone but Eddie had it. Some worse than others but he had absolutely nothing. Other than some blisters on his feet, he says he feels like a million dollars--------sounds like he's one tired puppy but he did it!!!! Anyway, just wanted to pass whatever info I had on to you all and I appreciated returning home to the many phone calls that you all left me asking for news. Ed returns home on Sunday. Aud
I sent you both an e-mail a few minutes ago, along with a bunch of other people, but wanted to let you both know that Gary didn't make it to the Summit. Apparently around 16,000 feet he felt he couldn't go on and it had to do with not having the proper clothes. It was extremely cold and Ed said Gary was just too cold but he also felt that Gary just wasn't able to continue strength wise also. He said he was terribly disappointed but has gotten over it and is looking forward to the Safari. Aud

THE END IS NEAR
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (MarketWatch) -- And now for some good news: The mother of all housing corrections appears to be nearing an end.
Nationwide, prices of new and existing homes are now only about 7% away from being as affordable as they were during the 1980s -- when the housing market was booming. At that time, median home prices equaled 2.9 times median household incomes.
To put this in perspective, at the apex of the bubble back in 2006, median home prices sold for about 4.5 times median incomes. In some markets they were actually twice as high -- clearly an unstable level that required creative lending and a bubble mentality among buyers and bankers alike.
For this key ratio to fall this far this fast required a combination of rising incomes -- and sharply falling housing prices. During the past three years personal incomes rose a total of 10% while home prices dropped by some 23%, on average.
This implies that by the time home prices bottom out, they will have fallen a total of 30% from their 2006 highs. In those markets where housing really got overheated, prices are already down by as much as 50%!
When combined with today's ultra-low mortgage rates, homes in many parts of the country may already be as affordable as they were in the halcyon days of the 1980s. Don't forget, in some areas home prices never bubbled up in the first place, so they have been priced right all along.
All that is needed now is a good dose of buyer confidence -- and a willingness on the part of the banks to resume lending to those who qualify for a mortgage.
Needless to say, unlike their counterparts of the bubble era, today's home buyers will be required to have some skin in the game. In other words, they will have to put down 20% or more. They will be required to document their incomes and be sure that the home they wish to buy is appraised at a realistic price.
From a seller's perspective, homes that are priced realistically (say, 30% off their peaks, or in some cases not more than three times local incomes) will sell the quickest. Keep in mind that even at these seemingly depressed levels, most houses will still fetch prices well above what they were in 2000.
Another piece of good news is that once housing prices touch bottom, it follows that the value of mortgage-backed securities will materialize as well. This is the sine qua non for thawing out the financial markets, for it will make the banks confident enough to resume lending -- first to each other, then to business and finally to consumers.
And once money begins circulating throughout the economy, many businesses will revive; they will stop firing and start hiring. For their part, consumers will resume spending -- which, in case you did not notice, now accounts for 70% of our gross domestic product.
So the Obama administration may not have to devise another plan to fix the economy. It could well be on the way to mending itself.

Save Your Hard-earned Cash from Scams
Saving money with coupons, online research and clearance sales doesn’t do any good if you fall victim to a money scam. Here are some tips from Todd Haymore, the commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, on how to avoid scams this year.
Recognize phishing. In this scam, criminals send e-mails or pop-up messages asking you to provide personal information such as a Social Security number, account number, password or PIN number. If you are uncertain about the legitimacy of the contact, call the phone number on your financial statements or on the back of your credit card. Typically, a legitimate company will not ask for this information over the Internet. If you think you have been a victim of phishing, you can contact the Federal Trade Commission on their identity theft Web site, ftc.gov/idtheft or call 877-438-4338.
Watch out for false notifications of sweepstakes winnings, lotteries and check scams. There is no legitimate reason someone would send you a check or money order, ask you to cash it and then wire a portion back to them. You can check out information about bogus lotteries and sweepstakes at the United States Postal Inspection Service Web site, postalinspectors.uspis.gov, or contact the Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs (OCA) on the consumer protection hot-line at 800-552-9963.
Don’t buy into inflated claims by employment agencies. Disreputable companies often claim that they have special leads on hundreds of high-salaried jobs and charge consumers for a list of those jobs in advance. Before paying an advance fee, make sure you know what services the company will perform and what your obligations are. Get the refund policy in writing. Ask yourself whether the company is trying to sell you something that is free or already available, such as newspaper ads. Do not sign any contracts before you have read and understood them, and be particularly cautious if the company is pressuring you to sign a contract on the spot.
The commissioner also suggests these proactive steps to help protect yourself as a consumer.
Check your credit report annually for accuracy. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies _ Equifax, Experian and TransUnion _ to provide a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months, at your request. To order your credit report, visit annualcreditreport.com or call 877-322-8228.
Reduce telemarketing calls. Put your cell phone and home phone numbers on the national “Do Not Call” registry. You can register online at donotcall.gov or call 888-382-1222 from the number you wish to register.
Opt-out of credit card solicitations and insurance policy offers. You can register for free by visiting optoutprescreen.com or calling 888-567-8688.
Take your name off of national solicitation mailing lists. Contact the Direct Marketing Association at dmachoice.org or write by mail to P.O. Box 643, Carmel, New York, 10512.
Check with the OCA before doing business. You can check the status of complaints against a company online at vdacs.virginia.gov/consumers (click on “searchable databases”) or call the consumer protection hot-line.

Verify charities. Before you donate to a charity, make sure it has registered with the OCA by visiting vdacs.virginia.gov/consumers (click on “charitable search”) or call the consumer protection hot-line.

Subject: World press says farewell to Bush
BERLIN, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Editorial writers around the world on George W. Bush's leadership and achievements:
Canada's Toronto Globe:
"Goodbye to the worst president ever. Bush was an unmitigated disaster, from the invasion of Iraq to global warming, Hurricane Katrina and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression."
Sunday Times in London:
"Bush leaves a country and an economy in tatters. America's national debt and unemployment nearly doubled on his watch."
Britain's Daily Mail:
"He entered office with a budget surplus of $128 billion. He exits with a $482 billion deficit.
He leaves the world facing its biggest crisis since the Depression, the Middle East in flames and U.S. standing at an all-time low."
The Scottish Daily Record:
"America is now hated in many parts of the world. Bush leaves a legacy of wars and the world economy in meltdown. He has been dismissed as a buffoon and a war-monger, a man who made the world a more dangerous place while sending it to the brink of economic collapse."
The Economist:
"He leaves as one of the least popular and most divisive presidents in American history. Bush has presided over the most catastrophic collapse in America's reputation since World War Two."
Le Monde (France):
"It's hard to find a historian who won't say that Bush was the most catastrophic leader the U.S. has ever known ... an interminable list of failures, starting with the war in Iraq."
Die Zeit (Germany):
"Bush brought great misery to the world."
Stern (Germany):
"Bush led the world's most powerful nation to ruin. He lied to the world, tortured in the name of freedom and caused lasting damage to America's standing."
The Pan-Arab al-Hayat newspaper:
"Thank God he spent half his time on vacation. He would have caused twice the damage if he had been more active and focused."
Austria's Wiener Zeitung:
"The United States was once the symbol of justice in the world but that has been damaged by Bush. A web of manipulation has cost America $900 billion and the lives of 4,000 soldiers -- along with at least 500,000 Iraqis. Even Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ranked higher in one international opinion poll than Bush."

4 Tips for Marketing to Baby Boomers Online
HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP MY FELLOW REALTORS/REAL ESTATE AGENTS AND BROKERS
Consisting of 77.2 million people, baby boomers-people born between 1946 and 1964-represent a prized, yet often misunderstood, demographic for online marketers. In fact, they represent the largest group within the U.S. Internet population at 56.7 million users, a full 29.4% of all Internet users. So why is there such confusion about how to effectively market to them? A recent report from the online market research firm eMarketer, “Boomers Online: Attitude Is Everything,” addresses this issue.
The first hurdle for online marketers targeting boomers is the disparity in age that can exist within the group. This has led many marketers to divide the group into two distinct segments: older boomers (those born between 1946 and 1954) and younger boomers (those born between 1955 and 1964). Also, boomers’ online behavior typically varies from that of most Internet users. They view the Internet as a tool or resource to help them accomplish things-not a lifestyle or source of entertainment the way their younger counterparts treat it.
Telling statistics
Here are some relevant statistics from eMarketer’s report that online marketers should know about the baby boomer generation:
- 74% use the Internet at least once a month;
- younger boomers outnumber older boomers online 35.3 million to 21.4 million;
- more boomer women are Internet users than boomer men;
- 21% of boomers report not having Internet access;
- 62% of households headed by someone age 50 or older had annual incomes of $75,000 or more, nearly 5% higher than in 2004;
- 61% said it doesn’t pay to be loyal to one brand, especially in today’s marketplace;
- 68% of baby boomer women trust recommendations and rated information they heard in conversations as credible; and
- further underscoring these findings, in a recent survey from the public relations firm Edelman, 54% of baby boomers said the advertising industry misrepresents and neglects them, especially online, where 72.5% of younger boomers and 83.2% of older boomers said online advertising focused on younger age groups.
Strategic marketing
Now that you know that baby boomers are extremely active online, here are four tips eMarketer recommends to help you take full advantage of this demographic:
1. Establish trust. Make sure your products and services live up to their claims. Boomers are more willing to try competing brands and services than younger consumers. They’re also more likely to spread the word about those experiences, good and bad.
2. Be inviting. Make sure your site is easy for baby boomers to access and use. eMarketer suggests the following: Offer visitors the ability to enlarge the size of fonts and photos; keep the design simple, not cluttered; display your privacy policy prominently; and make sure content is written in concise, understandable language.
3. Provide relevant information. Boomers pay attention to advertising about products and services they’ve decided to purchase. And they’re very willing to go online to find out more about those products and services, whether they heard about them from a friend or were motivated by ads in other media.
4. Don’t waste their time. Boomers view the Internet as a tool to help them accomplish tasks and lead better lives. They don’t spend as much time online as younger generations in part because of their utilitarian attitude. Prepare your landing pages to reflect the search terms Internet users type in so they don’t hit the back button to return to the search engine results page.

Home Maintenance Tip
Most people only think of ceiling fans as a way to keep cool in the summer. But, do you know your ceiling fan can help keep you warmer and reduce your heating bill in the winter? Simply run the fan on the low setting in clockwise direction. This creates a gentle updraft that recirculates warm air trapped at the ceiling, providing an even, comfortable heat throughout your room. The recirculation of warm air will allow you to reduce the heater setting while still keeping your room warm. To change the fan blades' spin direction, flip the switch on the head of the fan or check your remote control for a button that switches the spin direction.

DEFINITION OF A BILLION
How many zeros in a billion???
This is too true to be funny...
The next time you hear a politician use the
word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the 'politicians' spending
YOUR tax money.A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of it's releases.
A..
A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
B.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
C.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.
D.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
E.
A billion dollars ago was only
8 hours and 20 minutes,
at the rate our government
is spending it.While this thought is still fresh in our brain...let's take a look at New Orleans ....
It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.
Louisiana Senator,
Mary Landrieu (D)
is presently asking Congress for
250 BILLION DOLLARS
to rebuild New Orleans .. Interesting number...
what does it mean?
A.
Well... if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans
(every man, woman, and child)
you each get $516,528.
B.
Or... if you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.
C..
Or... if you are a family of four...
your family gets $2,066,012.
Imagine, now $700 billion bailing out banks in the US. That's enough to fund complete medical care for every man, woman and child currently alive in the US for 11 years!!
50 billion to bail out the auto industry???

Million-dollar California Home Could Be Yours for Just $150
January 15, 2009-(MCT)-It’s one of those things that sounds too good to be true. For just $150 and the answer to a simple word problem, you could be the proud owner of a sprawling ranch home worth more than $1 million.
This amazing opportunity is courtesy of the Bahm family, which is attempting to defy the slumping real estate market by holding a contest to give away their home on Lammers Road in Tracy, Calif.
And with the money they make from the contest, they’re going one step further and making donations to a number of local charities.
Inspired by a similar giveaway run by the San Jose, Calif., Chamber of Commerce, the Bahms decided to make the idea their own, despite some initial criticism.
“It’s a little different when an individual does something like this as opposed to a nonprofit,” Valerie Bahm said. “At first we came under heavy fire with people telling us that it was illegal, but the rules are simple and this is all very legal.”
Bahm explained that there are three criteria that have to be met: an entry form, an entry fee and some sort of skill to be performed or question to be answered.
Valerie and her husband Jerry Bahm opted for a word problem.
“Other people have done this with an essay contest, but we didn’t want to control who was going to win by grading anything,” she said. “We wanted something more general that would give everyone a chance.”
To enter, participants must fill out the form, pay the $150 entry fee and answer the question. The contest becomes valid when a minimum of 11,000 people sign up. The Bahms will cap the contest at 13,000 entries. The deadline to enter is June 15.
At that point all correct answers will be placed in the “tiebreaking drum,” and the winning entry will be chosen.
“They will receive a beautiful house with no mortgage, and we will retire to Texas having helped some of our favorite charities,” Bahm said. “It works out for everyone.”
The 3,800-square-foot home, at 25201 South Lammers Road, features three bedrooms and bathrooms and a large, open professional-grade kitchen, as well as a formal dining room, den and large game room. The property also includes a three-car garage and a 3,400-square-foot custom shop building, all set on nearly two acres.
If all goes as planned, the Bahms are anticipating being able to donate about $300,000, to be shared between The McHenry House Family Shelter, Tracy Interfaith Ministries, Hospice of San Joaquin and Weston Ranch Little League Baseball (which makes sense when you see the question you have to answer).
“Charity donations are down nearly 30 percent this year,” she said. “We want to do something about that.”
Darleen Quin, director of Tracy Interfaith Ministries, said her organization and others need all the help they can get at the moment.
“I don’t know if their plan is going to work, and we won’t count on spending the money, but any funds we might receive would be wonderful because things are getting pretty tight,” she said. “With the economy suffering, more and more people are turning to us for help.”
The Bahms have already had more than 1.5 million hits on their website and are well on their way to making the contest a reality.
“The economy is really a bummer right now,” Bahm said. “So hopefully we can have some fun and lightheartedness and help some people out in these gloomy times.”
For a complete list of rules, additional photos of the house and the official entry form, visit www.tracyhomegiveaway.com.

What you and your potential buyers should be aware...
A long-delayed update to the leading credit scoring formula is rolling out in 2009, offering a few advantages to consumers -- and some serious new risks.
FICO 08, the latest version of the FICO scoring model, was initially supposed to be introduced in the fall but was delayed by lawsuits between its creator, Fair Isaac, and the nation's three main credit bureaus.
Everybody's since made up, and TransUnion will offer the new score to lenders starting in late January, with Equifax introducing it in the spring, said Craig Watts, a Fair Isaac spokesman. (Experian, the third bureau, hasn't yet announced when it will offer the score.)
Fair Isaac says the new score will do a better job of predicting defaults than the classic FICO, which is used in more than 75% of mortgage lending decisions and by 90% of the largest U.S. lenders.
But FICO 08 is even more sensitive than the classic FICO to how much of your available credit you're using. If your credit card issuer slashes your credit limit -- which is increasingly likely these days -- you could see your scores plunge, regardless of whether you carry a balance.
Another hazard: The new scoring formula responds more negatively if consumers have few open, active accounts. Because more credit card issuers are shutting down unused and unprofitable accounts, that boosts the chances of damage to your scores.
3 victories for consumers
Not all the news is bad. FICO 08 offers some definite improvements for consumers in several areas, including:
Collections. The new formula ignores small collection accounts in which the original debt was less than $100. This is a big victory for consumers and one I've advocated for years, because niggling little debts -- created by unpaid library fines, forgotten parking tickets or a small medical bill that slipped through the insurance cracks -- had an outsize impact on people's scores.
Credit missteps. Fair Isaac says the new version is less punishing to those who have had a serious credit setback, such as a charge-off or a repossession, as long as their other active credit accounts are all in good standing.
Authorized users. Fair Isaac initially said FICO 08 would combat potential fraud by ignoring any "authorized-user" accounts in a borrower's credit report. After a big consumer outcry and potential credit fairness issues, Fair Isaac backed off and decided some authorized-user information would be included.

Credit score changes: 3 scenarios
Thaw out your frozen credit
Feds ban 'unfair' credit card rules
Perfect credit? You don't need it
Your 5-minute guide to credit scores
Adding a spouse or child to your credit card as an authorized user has long been a good way to improve that person's credit score, because your good history with the account typically could be imported to the relative's credit file. But in 2007, credit repair companies began abusing this feature by "renting" authorized-user slots from good credit risks and selling them to strangers who wanted to boost their scores. Some of these strangers bought slots on dozens of different people's cards, boosting their scores by tens or even hundreds of points.
Lenders pressured Fair Isaac to drop authorized-user information from its calculations. But consumer advocates protested, noting that the change could punish millions of innocent parties, including spouses whose entire credit history depended on authorized-user information. Legal experts also warned that ignoring information regarding spouses on authorized credit lines could be a violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act.
Video: New credit card safeguards
So now Fair Isaac says the FICO 08 formula will factor in authorized-user accounts "while materially reducing potential impacts to the score," according to the company's FICO 08 marketing brochure. Fair Isaac won't disclose exactly how it does that, but speculation is that the new score will count a limited number of authorized-user accounts and ignore the rest.
Better? Worse?
Fair Isaac made another course change regarding how FICO 08 would handle "inquiries," or applications for credit. At first, the company said applying for new credit would hurt less than in the past, since initial research seemed to show that inquiries had become less predictive of future defaults. Subsequent research, though, contradicted that finding, said Watts, the company spokesman. So you still want to be cautious and apply for credit only when necessary.
But clearly, one of the biggest hazards for consumers is the credit utilization issue. As issuers slash credit limits, the gap narrows between customers' balances and their limits, which is generally bad for their credit scores.
How bad is tough to predict. A limit reduction on a single account won't necessarily trash your credit, Watts said. Because FICO scores assess a lot of data, the effect of a single factor like a credit limit reduction will depend on what other data is on the credit report and how much the line is reduced.
"The person's score could be unchanged; it could go down," Watts said. "Or in some cases, it could go up."
It's fair to say, though, that big reductions in credit limits, and reductions affecting more than one account, aren't going to be good for your scores. Credit card expert Ben Woolsey of CreditCards.com noted that issuers' credit limit reductions so far -- and the promise of more to come -- are "clearly a hazard" to consumers' scores.
Still, Fair Isaac defends the accuracy of its formulas. Watts said the company's research has so far found the credit limit reductions have affected "a relatively small population, and those line reductions have been a relatively small amount for a sizable part of that population."
At the same time, he said, a "notable number" of consumers have reduced their use of revolving credit such as credit cards, which is helping to minimize any impact to their FICO scores from credit limit reductions.
"Our most recent performance study," Watts said, "indicates that the FICO score continues to appropriately rank-order consumers based on credit risk."
Different yardsticks, same strategies
Other ways to protect your scores:
Watch those balances. The less of your credit lines that you use, the better, even if you pay your balances every month. The credit bureaus and your credit scores don't distinguish between balances you pay off and those you carry month to month; the balance that's reported to the bureaus is typically the one that shows on your most recent monthly statement.
If you're in the habit of using a big portion of your credit limit -- because you travel on business or are chasing credit card rewards -- consider asking for a higher limit or using more than one card. Ideally, you'd use no more than 30% of your available limit at any time during the month; under 10% is even better.
If your credit card issuer slashes your credit limit, try to get the decision rescinded (read "Thaw out your frozen credit" for details). If that's not possible, use the card less and move at least a portion of your balance to other cards or to an installment loan. For credit scoring purposes, it's better to have small balances on a number of cards than a big balance on a single account.

IT' ALL ABOUT HAPPY HOUR (AND SAVING MONEY)
This year I’m stealing my parents’ favorite ritual: happy hour at home. At 5 p.m. on various weekdays, they’d whip up some whiskey sours and crack open a can of cocktail nuts. Sometimes the menu consisted of beers and pretzels. No frills, nothing fancy, it was just time to stop working, sit back and enjoy a little conversation.
Any way I can save a little money in this bad economy is a good thing. But I don’t intend to give up happy hour, because it’s one of life’s little pleasures, a time when friends and co-workers can come together for a few much-needed laughs.
I just need to ditch the happy hours of the old days. Typical outings were little more than an hour at a restaurant, but each of us spent at least $30. That was after only two glasses of wine each and a few shared appetizers. A few of those outings, and I was out of a considerable amount of mad money. I didn’t regret that then, but I’d regret it now.
Hosting happy hours at home can save a lot of cash without skimping on the fun. The five-part plan:
1. Start a rotation with friends of hosting happy hours at least once a month. The host is responsible for providing food and drinks.
2. Cap spending at $20 or less. That might not seem like much, but it’s enough for snacks and a limited number of drinks. Happy hours at home shouldn’t be considered meals.
3. Set time limits. Two hours is enough time for a getaway. Longer than that starts feeling like an obligation, and that’s no fun.
4. Don’t stress about cleaning. As long as the kitchen counters and table are decluttered and a bathroom is straightened, who cares about the rest of the house?
5. Create a fun but carefree ambience. Light a few candles, dim the lights and turn on some music. But the host shouldn’t go through the trouble of arranging fresh flowers throughout the house. Remember, it’s not about impressing guests. It’s just happy hour.

When It Comes to Rent, Sometimes Less is More
Rental Strategies
Many rental-home owners think that a higher rent will always result in more rent dollars-not true. The cost of a long vacancy can far exceed the cost of a lower rent with a shorter vacancy period. Since for every two-and-a-half weeks that a unit sits vacant, the annual revenue drops 5%, a long vacancy-due to a higher rent-can net an owner far less money.
It is imperative to make sure that the rental unit condition is not the reason why that vacancy is not renting. Lack of proper preparation contributes to longer vacancies and lesser desirable residents.
Provided that the house has been properly readied for the market, never let a vacancy sit longer than two weeks without lowering the rent. Proper vacant-unit preparation techniques include the following:
- Always make sure the walls have been completely repainted or at least appear that way.
- Touching up existing paint with the same paint can frequently accomplish this task.
- Clean is king. From the kitchen appliances and countertops to all of the fixtures in the bathrooms, it is of the upmost importance for the whole unit to look and smell clean.
- Clean all carpet and remove any odors that may exist.
- For the exterior, the lawn needs to be neatly groomed, with fresh-looking paint on exterior surfaces. Keep in mind that the outside of a rental house or apartment building is what forms a first impression for prospective renters.
Use Internet listing services to find comparable rental properties in the same area and price the unit accordingly. Recognize that the lesser amount of rent, realized from pricing the rent slightly below the market, can be easily offset by a shorter vacancy duration. This is especially important during slower times of the year and when market conditions are off.
Also, pay attention to annual lease cycles in the localized rental market. Many markets slow down during the last quarter of the year. With that knowledge, tailoring a lease to expire at a more favorable time of the year going forward makes good sense. It also warrants a lower-asking rent during slower annual periods.
The amount of the monthly rent is an important determinant for gross annual revenue, but don’t overlook the negative effects of a long vacancy on the bottom line, which can easily be averted by a lower rent adjusted for market conditions.

EXPERIMENTAL REALITY CHECK........IT SAYS SO MUCH
ARE WE ALL JUST FAKERS AND FOLLOWERS OF WHAT WE ARE TOLD BY OTHER THAN OURSELVES TO ENJOY, LISTEN, APPRECIATE AND OR REACT TO? READ BELOW FOR A VERY INTERESTING RECENT, REAL LIFE, EXPERIMENTAL, REALITY CHECK. SAMUELIKO
Violinist in the Metro
A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousand of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.
A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.
A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.
Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats average $100.
Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?
One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:
If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

Violinist in the Metro
A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousand of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.
A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

The Amazon River pushes so much water into the Atlantic Ocean that, more than one hundred miles at sea off the mouth of the river, one can dip fresh water out of the ocean. The volume of water in the Amazon river is greater than the next eight largest rivers in the world combined and three times the flow of all rivers in the United States .
Antarctica
Antarctica is the only land on our planet that is not owned by any country. Ninety percent of the world's ice covers Antarctica . This ice also represents seventy % of all the fresh water in the world. As strange as it sounds, however, Antarctica is essentially a desert. The average yearly total precipitation is about two inches. Although covered with ice (all but 0.4% of it, i.e.), Antarctica is the driest place on the planet, with an absolute humidity lower than the Gobi desert.

ATTORNEY'S ADVICE - NO CHARGE
Read this and make a copy for your files in case
you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take
some of his advice! A corporate attorney sent the following
out to the employees in his company.
1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards .
Instead, put 'PHOTO ID REQUIRED.'
2. When you are writing checks to pay on your
20credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account
number on the 'For' line. Instead, just put the
last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest
of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check
as it passes through all the check processing channels
won't have access to it.
3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead
of your home phone. If yo u have a PO Box use that instead
of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your
work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks.
(DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have
it printed, anyone can get it.
4. Place the contents of your wallet on a
photocopy machine Do both sides of each license, credit
card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and
all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and
cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.
I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I
travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror
stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing
a Name, address, Social Security number, credit cards.
Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have first hand
knowledge because my wallet was stolen last month. Wit hin a
week, the thieve(S) o rdered an expensive monthly cell phone
package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line
approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number
from DMV to change my driving record information online,
and more.
But here's some critical information to limit
the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:
5. We have been told we should cancel our credit
cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free
numbers an d your card numbers handy so you know whom to
call. Keep those where you can find them.
6. File a police report immediately in the
jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., was stolen.
This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this
is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is
one).
But here's what is perhaps most important of
all: (I never even thought to do this.)
7. Call the 3 national credit reporting
organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your
name and also call the Social Security fraud line number. I
had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that
called to tell me an application for credit was made over
the internet in my name. The alert means any company that
checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and
they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.
By the time I was advised to do this, almost two
weeks after the theft, all the damage had been done. There
are records of all the credit checks initia ted by the
thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about before
placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has
been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this
weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped
them dead in their tracks.
Now, here are the numbers you always need to
contact about your wallet, if it has been stolen:
1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
2.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
3.) Trans Union : 1-800-680 7289
4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line):
1-800-269-0271

Tips for When You Encounter Black Ice While Driving
What makes black ice so dangerous is that it’s much harder to detect in advance than thicker, milky-looking ice sheets; black ice is moisture that has frozen clear. A thin layer of it doesn’t produce obvious discoloration and may await you on a road that looks essentially dry.
Black ice thrives in areas where there isn’t much direct sunlight, like tree-lined residential roads or tunnels. Bridges, overpasses and the roadway beneath overpasses are also notoriously treacherous. If pavement looks a little darker or more reflective than usual, you may be in for some black ice ahead.
If you encounter black ice on a roadway, resist that strong reflexive desire to act fast to regain control. The best general rule: do nothing. If you’re currently braking when you hit the ice, stop braking; if you’re accelerating, lift your foot completely; keep your steering wheel fixed in its current position. Never brake or press the gas when you’re on black ice. Instead, try to coast over it in your desired direction, because patches typically don’t stretch longer than 20 feet.
If your tail begins to drift in a certain direction, gently turn your wheel in the same direction that your car is drifting. Struggling against the drift by steering in the opposite direction will cause spin-outs.
Of course, our goal as drivers is to avoid these dangerous situations. One of the most important preventative measures during freezing or near-freezing conditions is to drive slower. Don’t tailgate, and try to think a few steps ahead in your commute, anticipating traffic stops and predictable congestion rather than slamming on the brakes. Slow and steady, folks.
It doesn’t matter how slow you drive if your windshield is opaque. Never leave home without good visibility through it. Keeping your headlights on may also help you visualize the faint sheen of black ice.
And don’t think all tires are created equal … if your tread is worn down and you’ve been meaning to get your tires replaces, don’t wait until the end of winter –do it now! Good tires are essential in freezing conditions as well as all other driving conditions. If you’re unsure about your tire tread, pull a quarter out of your pocket and place it in a tire groove with Washington’s head pointing toward the tire. If the tread rises to the top of Washington’s head or obscures his head a bit, you’ve got good tread.
Snow tires are available everywhere in winter months, and for added protection you can contact your local police department to see if studded tires are legal in your area.
If you think 4-wheel drive gives you carte blanche to ignore all precautions, think again. You’ve got an extra, helpful tool at your disposal, but you can still easily slide out of control. Be careful, like everybody else.
